Reflection for December 24
Andi, age 6
The Canticle of Zechariah, or the Benedictus, is not just another Advent gospel. It directly connects God’s promises to Abraham and David in the Old Testament with the fulfillment of redemption of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.
Remember, Zechariah doubted what God had promised to do for him and Elizabeth; he told Gabriel that he and his wife were too old. His lack of faith resulted in him being left mute until after John was born. When his speech was restored, his first words praised God and foretold the coming of the Savior. Zechariah’s proclamation told the story of God’s love for His people, including His love for Zechariah as He filled him with His Holy Spirit and gave him the gift of prophecy. This song of Zechariah is so important; it is commonly prayed at the close of Morning Prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours.
That’s quite the turnaround for the priest who didn’t think he would become a father but became the father of the prophet who prepared the way of our Lord and redeemer. It’s going to be a Merry Christmas!
