In the context of a Contemplative Day of Community, Experience, and Sharing, Doug presents an act of storytelling that explores the dynamics of the false self as seen through the eyes of an actor whose very vocation called him to become someone other than himself. Written and presented by Douglas Hertler (known professionally as Doug Lory), this one-man show depicts his unexpected and life-changing encounter with the writings of Thomas Merton, most notably Merton’s classic, No Man Is an Island.
This program will include a morning and an afternoon session of Centering Prayer.

Douglas Hertler
Douglas Hertler (aka Doug Lory) is an actor, playwright, retreat leader, and NYC tour guide. His career has included roles in television, film, and theater. Doug is also an actor/educator at Fordham University School of Law. He is a member of the International Thomas Merton Society and the American Teilhard Association. He lives in Queens, NY, with his wife Alex.
