Reflection for January 2

Pointing Others to Christ

They said to him then, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” John 19:22-23

When John is questioned by the priests and Levites, he declares his identity as a messenger of God and one to prepare the way for the Lord. He answers clearly and with humility.

As a mother of two young children, my primary vocation is to be a role model for them and point them to Christ. It is challenging because they see my imperfections inside and outside of the home. My hope is that they will remember the moments I reflected God’s love to them.

This past summer, our family went beach camping with our scouting organization. Part of the program involved beachcombing with the park ranger. We could not attend that event because I reminded my children that we cannot forget about God even when we are traveling or camping. We have to attend Mass. The beauty of our Catholic faith is that there is a Catholic Church in nearly every city/town to attend Mass. My hope is that my children will receive the gift of faith and always remember to put Christ first wherever they go. There are distractions in the world that can draw us away from Christ, but we are called, just like John, to stay connected to the true vine and reveal His love to others.

Praying the Rosary has been one source of strength for me. Having the comfort knowing that Mother Mary is beside me as a wife and mother through the joyful, sorrowful, glorious, and mysteries of life. What is your source of strength in fulfilling your vocation?
