Reflection for December 11
Owen, age 2
This gospel is welcomed today as we grow closer to the birth of Jesus. It is a proclamation and an invitation by Jesus to stir up his listeners. “Whoever has ears ought to hear.”
He speaks of one familiar to the crowds -- John the Baptist. Could John the Baptist be the Messiah? If not, perhaps Elijah, the prophet?
This was a turbulent and uncertain time for the Jews. Just like the crowds before Jesus, we, too, sit in our churches, this Advent, amidst dark times, contemplating the candles on the Advent wreath, reminded by its increasing light as we grow closer to the birth of our Lord.
Today, we know the answers to the questions Jesus proposed to his listeners, and I ask myself, what will be infused in me this Advent? Whose words will I hear? Who will John the Baptist be to me?
He is the one to herald in our Lord Jesus Christ!
