A Brush with God: Icon Painting Retreat
Start Time: 6:00 PM
Presenter: Rev. Peter Pearson
Offering: $500.00

During this 4 day retreat, participants will follow step by step instructions and complete an icon from start to finish. Over the past few years, thousands of people from a wide variety of spiritual traditions have found themselves drawn to the mysterious and prayerful images found in the icons of Eastern Christianity. We will discuss the development of iconography, the spirituality of creating an icon, and praying with icons along with a number of related issues. Aside from the materials provided for use during the retreat or workshop, additional materials and texts will be made available to further the participants’ pursuit of iconography. Each workshop session includes time for prayer and a blessing of the icons created during our time together. No prior experience is required, all skill levels are welcome.

Rev. Peter Pearson
has been a student of iconography for over forty years. He studied under Russian iconographer Dr. Nina Bouroff in Bethesda, Maryland and studied with Philip Zimmerman at the Saint John of Damascus Academy of Sacred Arts. Peter has created hundreds of icons for private collectors, churches and other institutions throughout the world. He is the author of “A Brush with God” and “Another Brush with God.” His passion for this art is obvious and highly infectious.

Wild With Words Retreat: Writing as Spiritual Practice
Start Time: 6:00 PM
Presenter: Rev. Dr. Martha Brunell
Offering: $250.00

Words are an artistic medium close at hand. They invite you and me to be co-creators. Many spiritual writers describe our soul as our essential wildness. This Wild With Words (WWW) writing retreat will explore spiritual practices in general through a particular writing practice. WWW taps creative expression, wholeness and wellbeing, community building, and intentional spiritual rhythms. WWW provides opportunities to surrender to the leading of your pen, to remain rooted in the present moment, to pay attention to God’s presence, and to entertain surprise and spontaneity. A buffet dinner is available on Friday night from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The retreat concludes with Sunday brunch at noon.

Rev. Martha Brunell
has been a pastor, teacher, chaplain, and writer in the United Church of Christ for over 30 years. Her journey has wound its way into urban churches, interim ministry, non-profit administration, domestic violence, end of life care, community education, seminary classrooms, and spiritual formation. Wild With Words is one aspect of the ministry she calls Bricolage. Bricolage is a mosaic of spiritual programs, practices, rituals, and resources for piecing together beauty and meaning. Martha’s M.Div. is from Andover Newton (1978) and her D.Min. in preaching is from Aquinas Institute (2002). She loves to read, write, hike, cook, travel, and compose life with all sorts of people. And she finds great joy in her two young adult daughters. She is currently the pastor of Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
