Check
Please make checks payable to Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center and mail to: Development Office, Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center, 303 Tunxis Rd., West Hartford, CT 06107-3119.

Credit Card
Holy Family accepts Visa, MasterCard and Discover.  Credit card gifts may be made online or over the phone at 860-760-9716.

Securities
Gifts of securities such as stocks and mutual fund shares are a great way to donate to Holy Family.  In most cases, you can take a tax deduction for the full market value of the gift.

Most often, securities are transferred electronically to our account.  It is extremely important for us to know the identity of the donors of all securities gifts in order to credit these gifts.  If these gifts are electronically transferred to our account without telling us first, our broker cannot trace who the donor is.  Please instruct your broker to contact the Development Office by email, phone or letter to inform us of the securities being donated.

Gifts of Personal Property (gifts in kind)
The acceptance of gifts in kind is made on a case by case basis.  By law Holy Family is prohibited from appraising the value of gifts of personal property in any form.  For donations of personal property valued by the donor at $500 and over, the donor must complete the appropriate IRS forms for tax deduction purposes; for property valued at $5,000 or more, the donor must obtain a qualified, independent appraisal.  For additional information on gifts in kind, please contact the Development Office at 860-760-9716 or holyfamilydevelopment@cpprov.org.

Real Estate
Gifts of real estate - also accepted on a case by case basis - may include developed or undeveloped property.  Real Estate may be given outright or through a bequest, or may be used to fund a charitable trust or other life income plan.  (Please remember that if you deed us your home, you can continue to live there.)  For additional information on gifts of real estate, please contact the Development Office at 860-760-9716 or holyfamilydevelopment@cpprov.org.

Planned Giving
Visit the Planned Giving page. For information on bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder or lead trusts, and other ways to include Holy Family in your estate plans, please contact the Development Office at 860-760-9716 or holyfamilydevelopment@cpprov.org.

Life Insurance
You can donate a life insurance policy to Holy Family or simply name us as the beneficiary. Please note that Holy Family’s legal name is Passionist Fathers of Connecticut, Inc.  For additional information, please contact the Development Office at 860-760-9716 or holyfamilydevelopment@cpprov.org.

Matching Gifts
You may be able to double, triple or quadruple the value of your gift to Holy Family if you are employed by one of the many companies with matching gift programs.  Companies will often match the contributions of spouses and retirees, as well as those of employees.  Simply obtain a matching gift form from your company (usually the Human Resources or Community Relations department), fill it out and send it with your contribution.  We will take care of the rest.  For additional information, please contact the Development Office at 860-760-9716 or holyfamilydevelopment@cpprov.org.

TAX-FREE GIFTS FROM IRA ACCOUNTS RE-AUTHORIZED!
Congress has re-authorized legislation that allows donors to make charitable gifts from their IRA accounts during tax years 2008 and 2009 without incurring income tax on the withdrawal - in other words, you can donate from your IRA to a non-profit, tax-exempt organization like Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center—tax free.

If you must begin taking mandatory minimum distributions from your IRA at age 70 ½, you’ll pay income tax on the amount you withdraw.  However, by making a gift from your IRA to Holy Family, you will avoid paying taxes on the amount.  You’ll also help sustain Holy Family’s mission into the future.

To qualify:

  • You must be 70 ½ years of age or older at the time of the gift.
  • The limit is $100,000 per taxpayer.  A married couple can donate up to $200,000 provided each spouse owns at least one IRA.
  • Gifts must be outright.  The contributions cannot be used to fund gift annuities or charitable remainder trusts.
  • Gifts must be made DIRECTLY by your plan provider from an IRA to a charity; funds that are withdrawn by you and then donated do not qualify and you will be taxed on the amount.
  • When making a gift in this way, the donor will not receive a charitable deduction for the gift.  On the other hand, the larger benefit to the donor is that you will not pay income tax on the amount withdrawn.
  • The law applies only to traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs and not other forms of retirement plans such as 401(k), 403(b), etc.
  • The gift can be used to satisfy your Minimum Required Distribution (MRD).

Example: Mike celebrates his 71st birthday this year, which means that he is required to distribute $10,000 from his IRA accounts.  Mike can instruct his plan administrator to transfer that amount to Holy Family as a charitable gift to avoid paying taxes on this additional income.  He can then fulfill his dream of ensuring the future of the retreat ministry at Holy Family.

Please contact the Development Office at 860-760-9716 with any questions.  Your call will be completely confidential and will place you under no obligation.  Please also consult your own tax advisor.
